John begon zijn online marketing carrière reeds in de schoolbanken waar hij werkte voor onder andere WorldOnline. In 1998 begon hij bij IBM Global Services waar hij werkte in het e-commerce solutions team.

Daarnaast had hij tevens een spilfunctie in een internationaal partnerprogramma gericht op grote webagencies als Lostboys en Agency.com.

In 2000 ging John naar DoubleClick, waar hij naast online advertenties en e-mailings ook de eerste Nederlandse Google campagnes verzorgde. Eind 2001 werd DoubleClick overgenomen door AdLINK.

In 2004 startte hij het interactieve bureau Urbanology wat zich al snel specialiseerde in online communities en engagement marketing. Zo was het bureau verantwoordelijk voor één van de eerste Nederlandse Hyves en Youtube campagnes en werkte het voor klanten als Het Rode Kruis, Reed Business, Discovery Networks, Tommy Hilfiger, O’Neill en MTV.

In 2009 besloot hij als solo verder te gaan op het gebied van social media strategie en startte hij het adviesbureau Some like it social. In 2011 stapte John als partner Strategy & Technology in het social agency 3sixtyfive. Tot op de dag van vandaag houdt John Some like it social aan als zijn persoonlijke weblog.


Met 3sixtyfive adviseert John merken over hun strategie voor het sociale web, spreekt hij hierover op evenementen en is hij voorzitter van de taskforce social van het Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB). Tot zijn klanten behoren inmiddels Ubisoft, RTL Nederland, De Unie, ATAG, Readershouse Brand Media (SEAT) en het ECN.
